An awesome musical electronic toy from Blue Man Group in nearly out-of-the-box condition. Only a faint dime-sized stain in the iPod drawer keeps it from being essentially mint condition. No corrosion in the battery compartment (takes four AA batts, not included) or a 7.5v adapter (not included). The paddles are missing but this "instrument" is easier and more fun to play simply by waving your fingers and hands over the tubes. Infrared sensors detect your movement with excellent sensitivity to produce a note from each tube.
There are eight main instruments played by individual tubes, labeled on the rim of each tube (Cymbal, Snare, Electric Snare, Conga, Ride Cymbal, Hi-Hat, Hi-Timbale, and Bass Drum) plus another mode where five additional instruments can be played on a musical scale across the tubes (Xylophone, Steel Drum, Marimba, Drum, and one I don't recognize). As tubes are played, the blue plastic rings light up with LEDs.
There are five built-in rhythmic Blue Man signature melodies that play in a continuous loop while you play along. Plus five built-in non-continuous tunes that sound more like multi-instrumental pop improvisations (two sound like Aretha Franklin and Jerry Lee Lewis).
I think it can even record and play back? (Haven't figured this out yet.)
In addition to the iPod input there's a "mic" input (untested) and headphone output (untested; I assume it's stereo sound). It probably sounds fantastic when hooked up to a stereo with decent speakers.
Some claim this toy is great for autistic children with autism and even for preschool kids? It's probably not suitable for toddlers. It must be made of ABS plastic because it's much more sturdy than it looks.
$25 cash and carry. In Lisle near Ogden & Naper Blvd. Search "toysaurus" for other postings.
